The Global Learning and Arts (GLA) Building at Cascadia Community College, in Bothell, WA is a 54,000-square foot classroom and office building designed to promote interdisciplinary collaboration by housing programs that integrate visual and performing arts, world languages and international business curriculum. Although the State of Washington requires all state projects to achieve a LEED Silver level of certification, Cascadia Community College and the entire project team committed from the start to exceed that mandate. Innovative sustainable elements including a rainwater collection system for flushing toilets, green roof gardens and a photovoltaic array that when installed in spring of 2013, earned the last point needed for LEED-NC Platinum certification. Existing trees were salvaged and re-used as interior benches and FSC-certified wood was used for other interior wood elements.

Cascadia Community College is the second community college in Washington State to accomplish a LEED Platinum certified building. O’Brien360 began work with facilitation of a large LEED workshop that established the goals and LEED pathway for the project and then served as the LEED Project Manager through final certification. The GLA building project is an example of how a committed team and dedicated owner can make great things happen. In particular, the project lead at CCC, Dee Sliny, was a tireless champion for high performance on the project. O’Brien360 provided key education and technical information to Dee, the College, and the design team to help them make decisions on pursuing some of the higher level sustainability goals that ultimately contributed to achieving LEED Platinum.
